Increase Landing Page Conversions
Optimizing conversion rates requires minor structural shifts that reduce user effort. Here is our step-by-step playbook to lift conversions.
Understand the real differences in purpose, user intent, traffic sources, and conversion rates between your website homepage and dedicated landing pages.
When I first started building websites, I used to treat the homepage and landing page as almost the same thing. Both had sections, both had buttons, and both were meant to represent a business online.
But over time, especially while working on conversion-focused projects, it became clear that they are completely different in purpose.
A homepage is designed to introduce everything about a business. A landing page is designed to make a visitor take one specific action.
And this difference completely changes how users behave, how long they stay, and whether they convert or not.
In this article, I'll break down the real difference between the two and explain when each one should be used for better results.
A homepage is the main entry point of a website. It is usually the first page users see when they visit a domain.
Its main purpose is not to sell immediately, but to guide users, build general brand trust, and direct them to different services.
Because of this structure, a homepage is more like a 'directory' than a conversion-focused page. Users can explore freely, click different sections, and learn about the brand at their own pace.
A landing page is a focused, single-purpose page designed for conversions.
Unlike a homepage, it does NOT try to offer multiple options or exploration pathways. Instead, it is built around one specific goal, removing all navigation headers and footer links to keep the visitor focused.
The primary headline, subheadline, and Call To Action must state your value proposition under 2.5 seconds.
| Feature | Homepage | Landing Page |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Purpose | General brand introduction & exploration | Specific conversion goal |
| Navigation Header | Has full navigation menu & links | Minimal or no navigation menu |
| Traffic Sources | Organic search, direct, brand queries | Paid search ads, targeted campaigns |
| Focus Level | Multiple goals (careers, about, products) | Single focused Call To Action |
From experience, landing pages almost always outperform homepages when it comes to conversions.
A homepage gives users too many options, which often leads to choice paralysis. A landing page removes all unnecessary elements and guides users toward a single action.
